Tinos - Panagia Evagelistria

Panagia Evagelistria is the most important church in all of Greece and is visited annually by thousands upon thousands of Greeks. You could say that of Panagia is for the Greeks what Mecca is to Muslims. The icon is considered not only have healing powers, it is also said that it can perform real miracles.

The real fans crawl all the way to church. Right up to the icon! It is the crawling that makes Panagia to such a strange attraction, the icon's power is considered to be larger if you sincerely committed to arrive. And more strenuous than crawl up the long hill and then up all the stairs I find hard to imagine. Some crawlers are old, some wearing heavy candles on the back, it is for me a mystery how they cope crawl all the way up. But they struggle slowly and purposefully all the way up. Home »
